Had a long talk with Deluxe yesterday, and one of it was thinking on how to expand our eBay business. Yeap, during our marriage counseling we were told that even though Husband should be the head of the house, but before making any big decision we should always discuss about it so that it will bring out the best solution to give the best results. 2 heads are better than one ya?? Hehehe.
Ok back to the story, so apart from selling antiques which we are quite satisfied with the current sales outcome, but somehow we still feel that we can do even better each month. So we need to fully utilize the resources we have, and so we came to a conclusion that we should start another different account and try selling other products. So this will be my very first post in the eBay category, on how to start selling in eBay.
Before creating an account, which I will show how on the next post in this section. I will answer all the general questions regarding eBay.
Who Can Sell on eBay?
Basically, anyone who is 18 and above can sell on eBay. Housewives who have extra time and too many old clothings where she does not know where to get rid of, a fresh graduate who is still couldn’t find any place to work or even a retired person who wish to earn an extra buck or two.
What Can I sell on eBay?
Once someone told me that eBay is a big trash can, and we are all scavengers. You can practically find almost anything on eBay, from baby pins, toiletries, to even used cars. So you won’t be surprised if you can sell your old pair of jeans which you can’t fit in, to someone else for quite a reasonable price. “One man’s junk, is another man’s treasure”.
Where Can I Sell on eBay?
Just as long you have a PC, and Internet connection you can start selling on eBay.
When can I sell on eBay?
It’s up to you to decide. If you have plenty of time, but you do not know what to do with it. This would be a great time to invest in.
How can I sell on eBay?
- Do your research – which will be explained on this post
- Take pictures
- Describe and list your items
- Receive payments and send your items
Ok, let’s get started. First we need to list out the products that we are planning to sell, and where to sell it first. Most likely I recommend one should start selling at eBay Malaysia, because it is still free and it has the basic features before heading out to the real site to start selling. Let say we plan to sell T-Shirts, just type in at the top right corner T-Shirts and click on the search button.

After that it will display a list of T-Shirts being listed by other sellers. Have a look inside of the details and see what type of T-Shirts they are selling. See how much they are selling, and if you can get cheaper prices for your T-Shirts you might be able to make an extra income out of it. Always do take into consideration of packing materials, petrol to travel to the post office and other stationaries as well, and calculate how much you can really earn from selling one product. Will elaborate more on this on another post.
It is good if you can keep an account on what you sell and how much is the actual cost and everything. So that it will help you save time on decision making in the future such as listing on eBay paid sites, or even opening up a store in eBay.
Anyway, before I end this post, here are a few do and don’t you should always practice, when selling on eBay.
Don’t
- Copy and paste other people’s listing, pictures, details and etc.
This is a very bad practice as it tends to make not only one lazy and will not learn anything from it. The actual people who start this listings worked very hard to design the page and everything. So please consider.
- Sell Fake / Imitation Products
Selling things like this will definitely get your account suspended and would have a small chance of getting your account reinstated, plus people will not purchase anything from you again if you do managed to get your account reinstated. So don’t risk of losing potential customers.
- Runaway With People’s Money
Apparently, there are indeed many people out there are taking this opportunity to cheat people’s hard earn money by selling maybe high end products lower than the market price. Whereby the buyer actually banks in the money, and the seller never send it. Unfortunately for us, Police are not being very helpful and won’t do anything much about it. So chances of the person being caught is like 1/10, unless there are a group of people who will be willing to really hunt the person down. You may not get punished now, but there’s always a saying “What comes around, goes around”.
- Create another account to bid on your own items
This is a very serious offense. Plus you would not only get your account suspended, people will not trust you anymore. Remember, trust is the most important factor here on eBay. Without trust, people will not even dare to buy anything from you.
Do’s
- Price Your Item Correctly
The problem nowadays, not only being seen on eBay but as well as the shop around here. People are throwing prices off the rack. One item can be easily sold at RM20, but just because they want to get volume they throw their prices to maybe RM10 or just a little bit more than the cost price. So if you see someone selling at RM10, then sell at more less the same price or slightly less by maybe 5-10% to get your business started. Remember that this will be a win-win situation, if you sell at a higher price then start selling at that price.
- Be creative
Not only by making your listing creative, by having your very own unique product you can make a nice profit out of it. And make sure you know your product very well, so that if you have buyers who have tons of questions you’ll know what to say
- Be courteous
Just by saying thank you, or it has been pleasant dealing with you can make a huge difference when you begin to sell. People would always come back to you for your products and to be honest won’t even mind paying slightly more if you are nice towards them.
- Not give up easily
Sometimes, maybe no one will buy your items at first. It’s always good to try and try again. Learn from your mistakes, and review why people do not want to purchase your items. You might also consider of lowering your prices, or change your layout to be more presentable and so forth. Once you managed to get the ball rolling, you won’t be able to stop it
Anyway, I think I’ll stop here for now. I’ll post some more on this topic in another day or two, and hopefully will have more examples to give as well
And also do visit the forums on eBay as you will meet tons of other sellers and they might give you another tip or two on this. Have a nice day.
