No Flood Yesterday

I’ve been stuck with the flu for the past few days already. Probably I caught it while scooping the water out from the pathway the other day. Never the less, I need OJ and tons of vitamin C to stay alive. Lol.

The water from the river apparently didn’t overflow like the day before yesterday. So it was good, and glad that it didn’t give many of us headache. Many prepared to battle against the high tide yesterday, but fortunately for all us, we didn’t have to because the river was very low yesterday morning and basically when the high tide came, the river managed to hold it off and pretty much gave a lot of people a sigh of relief.

Glad that God answered our prayers. But we are not out from the storm yet. The clouds looks as if it’s going to give out a heavy shower and the winds have not stop blowing around waterfront here. But never the less, despite the storm may come there are certain things that pretty much reminds us that God still cares and He’s watching over us every minute. As I was walking this morning to get breakfast for Deluxe and myself, I took out my camera for a walk. It’s been a while since I last go around here and begin to shoot at the surroundings at waterfront. Was trying to look for flowers but, couldn’t really find one. Until I saw this, untouched by the storm. As it stood out vibrant in colors, it reminded me how God loves all his people and the blessings He has given me for the past year.

Yeap, come to think of it He gave me a lot of opportunity when I seriously need it. And I would recall Burnett would say, that “Sometimes when you feel that God closes the door, He’ll make sure He open a window for you”. And guess that’s how Burnett lived his life, and pretty much a happy go lucky fella that never back down from a challenged. Even at times, when I pretty much feel as if I want to break down and give up, He never fails to show little signs and wonders to show that He still cares.

Anyway, despite the economic situation here may be a little bit slow. Once again, God’s been good to sort of help me out once again in opening another window for me. And I couldn’t thank Him even more. Guess it’s all good, whereby if you are faithful in little things, God will give you more bigger things to do in the future. Anyway, it looks as if it’s really going to rain heavily today. So be careful everyone, and make sure you carry an umbrella with you. Have a nice day!

Flood Waterfront Part 2

Still feeling the effects from yesterday desperation move. Whole body is aching, especially my back. It hurts so much that I couldn’t even carry Esther for more than 5 minutes :( Hope to get well soon.

Apparently the river seems low today. Which is a good sign I believe. Hopefully when the tides come, it will be sufficient to hold it and not over flow like yesterday. We only had a good 3 hours of sun this morning, before dark clouds loom over the city of Kuching once again.

After getting lunch this afternoon, I went and got myself a few pieces of plywood from upstairs. As I tried to place it in front of the shop to see if it would fit in between of the gate as well as the steps. Unfortunately I was only able to cover certain amount of space on the left and right side of the entrance. Whereby the center I was not able to block it, was due to the locks in between. So we might have some problems there.

Deluxe and Esther came down the shop just now. As I tried to figure out how are we going to block the drain from flowing into our pathway again. Armed with only 2 bottles of mineral water (one big, and one small), 1 sundrop tin can as well as a “U” shaped brick. I began to wrap them up with soft foil (dunno what you call it, the one that normally comes with a TV whereby it protects the screen with that sort of cloth. Well when you see it, you know what I mean), and tried to place them inside each of the drain hole. And what do you know, it fits nicely. But of course you might need to nudge a little to make sure it stays in there. So currently all 3 holes have been blocked, but one thing for sure, as there are small holes around the drain pipes. We might not be able to stop the flood but at least it will not fill up as quickly as yesterday.

Anyway, the time is now 5.46pm and I will be going out to get dinner before the flood begin. Hopefully we might not need to worry about the flood, and pray it doesn’t rain tonight. Wish me luck! And good luck to others who will be facing the high tide later this evening again. Anyway, this song was a blessing to many when the Tsunami came.. This may not be Tsunami, but I guess it would serve the same purpose.. May God bless all of you!

Dark And Cloudy Day

About 1,500 people would be out of job here by March this year. Poor guys from Western Digital apparently is going to shut down by then. 1,500 people is quite a lot for Kuching itself. Let’s hope that these guys will have a backup plan.

It has been a dark and cloudy day today. So far there have not been any sign of rain, apart from the early morning drizzle. It is said that this rain will last till Wednesday. So just better get ourselves prepared. There were a few hours when the sun decided to show it’s presence among the citizen of Kuching. So I guess it would give Kuching people a sigh of relief for now.

This is how the water level looks like yesterday during the flood.

Just went across to see how’s the flood situation is like. Apparently the river had risen up once again to the height how it was like the day before. I only managed to take a few pictures, then went right back to the shop. It wasn’t long before the drain outside our shop began to overflow and pretty much filling up our pathway. By then, Deluxe was downstairs as I began to shift up the things to upstairs and move whatever that is wooden to higher ground. It was about 6.45pm when the pathway was filled up with water from the river. So I was pretty much desperate and began to use the dust pan to sort of scoop the water out from the pathway and on to the street.

Apparently the floating cement pathway gave way as the flood went too high from what it has expected to be.

Probably that wasn’t such a bright idea at first, as people would come up and tell me it’s pointless to do it. But all I was thinking was that, I didn’t want the water to flow into the shop. Next alternative that I did was I took the trash bin (the big green color with wheels) and start filling that up with water from the pathway. When it’s about 3 quarter full, I push the trash bin across the street and pour it out on the grass. I did it about 4-5 rounds before the water finally stop and began to go down. By then, I was pretty much tired already and my hands were shaking a bit. As I waited for it to go down a little bit more I started to clean up. By then it was about 8.15pm when things began to clear up, and I pretty much went upstairs to get myself cleaned up and had a long shower. After that I went out and got us some dinner, and basically came home eat and went straight to bed. So basically that’s what I did, and thank God that it didn’t rain if not I wouldn’t dare to imagine how it would be like later. May God have mercy upon us.

Flood Kuching Water Front

This is a special report which I think I wouldn’t want to delay in posting this. I couldn’t believe what I saw actually happened here in the streets of Main Bazaar. While I was fending off the leaks inside the shop, little did I know something else happened outside the shop.

Every 2-3 hours, I would look outside the window from our shop just to see if it was still raining. I never really took noticed of the river across the street. When I was about to go out just now to buy dinner, to my surprise it was flooded. I thought something was blocking the drain, but the aunty which was a few shop next to mine came by and asked if my shop was ok. Because it went very high just now, and her shop the water actually went in. I quickly went back inside and check the carpet, it was DRY. Thank God for that, as I thought if the water did really run into the shop we would pretty much have huge problem in cleaning up the place because it’s all carpeted. Anyway, after that I pretty much took out my camera and head across to waterfront and check out how high was the river actually.

Picture on the left shows how high it went up, and on the right is the actual height of the river when it is not that high.

So you could imagine how high the river went up. And yes the platform height will float according to the water level. Never thought I would be able to witness it with my own eyes. As I heard previously, it happened a few years back prolly in 2003 as Deluxe told me one of her friend who was working nearby here said you can see the boat went up really high. And as shown on the picture on the left, it indeed went up that high. Lol. Apparently it didn’t end just there, Irene reported that “KMC flat, Bomba, RHB Bank area, Shell at Padungan, opposite Shell and Hock Lee area” were also affected.

Unfortunately, Jalan Padungan was also not spared as I was heading there to get Fry Rice for Deluxe and myself. And unfortunately for me, Hong Kong Noodles was inaccessible. As you can see all the workers that night was not busy serving or preparing food. But rather trying to prevent the water from going into the store. The shop next to Hong Kong Noodle pretty much suffered as well, as the water went in because it their place was not raised unlike Hong Kong Noodle. Didn’t took a picture of it, as the shop owner didn’t like the idea of me snapping away. Lol. So I ended up getting Mc Donalds instead. I guess that’s pretty much about it from me now. Until tomorrow, let’s pray that it wouldn’t continue to rain again tonight. Have a safe weekend everyone. For more pictures you can head over to my multiply, flickr or picasa website.
