Top scorers discover again PSD scholarships are not guaranteed

Taken from The Star, May 14 2009

SEREMBAN: A number of SPM top scorers have discovered yet again that a string of A’s are no guarantee to a scholarship from the Public Service Department.

When Mo Ye Voon scored 10 1A’s and a 2A, she thought she was on the way to becoming a doctor.

However, Mo, a student of SM KGV who recently completed her national service training in Malacca, was disappointed that she was not selected by the PSD as a scholarship recipient.

“I was not even considered for a medical course at any of the local universities,” said Mo, whose father’s income as a factory supervisor would not be enough for her to realise her dream.

She hoped the PSD would reconsider her application as she had no one else to turn to.

At the Rasah MP Loke Siew Fook’s service centre near here, Mo’s mother, Teo Ai Woo said her daughter was also active in co-curricular activities and had represented the district in badminton.

“She has been crying every night since learning that she did not get the scholarship,” said the housewife.

Loke said he would meet Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz to appeal Mo’s case.

He said other students in a similar predicament should contact him at 016-668 6165.

In SUNGAI PETANI, SMK Ibrahim student Chok Chun Ynh is also heartbroken that his application for a scholarship to study abroad has been rejected.

Instead, Chok who is among the six students who obtained 14 1A’s in the country, was offered a place at a local public university,

Chok’s mother Tan Lee Mei said her son who aspired to study medicine, had received several overseas and local awards after taking part in various competitions and quizzes.

Chok’s school mate Lee San Xiu, 17, who obtained 13 1A’s had also been given a scholarship to study locally although he applied for one to study overseas.

Lee said both he and Chok had represented the school in co-curricular activities at state and national levels.

The PSD, he said, had informed them that there were too many excellent candidates but places were limited.

Two of their school mates Paul Khaw Chu Sern, 17, and Chuah Chian Yeong, 17, who both obtained 12 1A’s, failed to get any PSD scholarships.

Lee’s father Wai Heng, a civil servant, said an analysis showed that the students were among the top 250 SPM scorers in the country and who had fulfilled the criteria for selection to study overseas.

“Why then are their applications rejected?” he asked.

According to a nationwide analysis of last year’s SPM results, three students scored 16 1A’s, two scored 15 1A’s, six 14 1A’s, 41 of them scored 13 1A’s while 229 scored 12 1A’s.

According to a report, the department had interviewed 8,363 out of the 15,084 candidates who had applied for scholarships under the foreign degree programme between March 31 and April 3.

In view of the limited places abroad, especially in critical subjects, the PSD also offered 2,000 scholarships to outstanding students to pursue studies in local universities.

Unsuccessful candidates have until May 18 to appeal online.

Further Studies?

I wouldn't want Esther to follow my footsteps. I never really got the chance to go overseas to further my studies.  I basically completed everything here locally via distant learning.  One main reason why I decided not to go overseas was that I didn’t want to burden my parents.  No doubt that they could send me over, but I just didn’t want to burden them too much.  Besides, at least I won’t have to miss my favorite food which was Kolo Mee and my parent’s won’t have any problems with the currency exchange for me to spend.

Anyway, I’ve already pretty much got that mentality when I was 16 years old.  As most of us would pretty much think of our future pathway provided by what stream we would end up in.  Let’s just say that, if I were to complete form 5 and have gone to New Zealand (which was most likely the place where I would be heading).  Then there would be 3 of us there, and I kept on thinking that maybe just maybe it might be too burdensome for my parents.  So I’ve pretty much decided on probably doing it locally while taking a part time job, as I thought it was possible to do so after hearing from so many people who managed to complete their studies while having a part time job.

Unfortunately for me, I wasn’t in those group of categories whereby my work began to demand too much from me.  So instead of taking 4-5 subject a semester, I ended up taking 1-2 which wasn’t really a good strategy, thus causing my delay in completing my studies early.  That time I didn’t want to let go of the job was due to the fact that I’ve already been making quite a comfortable living for myself.  But as I noticed my other friends who were in the same batch as I was already completing their studies got me realized that I’ve been way behind.  So I decided to let go everything, and went to Kuching to pretty much concentrate on finishing my studies soon.  No doubt things turned out ok in the end, but it could have been a little bit faster if I didn’t pretty much tried to “act smart” in the first place.

Education seems to be very important nowadays at this time and age.  Unlike last time, without a degree you would end up being a timber tycoon or pretty much some successful person who’s pretty much reaping the benefits he sowed previously.  But now, without a certification it’s kinda hard for one to pretty much get a job that pays well.  But the problem with education now is that unless you can get a scholarship or being accepted to local university, education is going to be extremely expensive.

Visit http://koppbhd.com As for me, I wouldn’t want Esther to go through life and think that she will burden us in the future.  So what do I do to ensure that Esther would have a secure future even if something might happen to me?  A friend of mine came up to me and introduced me to this scholarship program which is how they say “FREE”.  Free in the sense you get back what you put in, plus the interests which I will be getting in the next 19 years.  This is something which I found much better compared to education plan that was being given by the insurance company.  Anyway, I don’t think I can tell you more as I wouldn’t want to get into trouble with these parties.  Just to give you a rough idea on how they work is that, basically my payments are being hold by a Trustee so I can be sure that my money will not be gone just like that.  And let say few years down the road, something could happen to me. I can rest assure that Esther will still be able to continue her studies without any problems.

Anyway, here’s a copy and paste which I got from their website on what will I be getting back in 19 years time when Esther will step foot into college.

I’m currently taking the 5 years contribution as I find that you can get more interests out from it.  No doubt that you might need to fork out a little bit more, but this actually forces you to save whether you like it or not.  Anyway, this are actually the cost for each units.  For an example, because I’m taking the 5 years contribution and Esther falls in the category of Age 0-1.  So 1 Unit I need to pay RM1680/year.  At the end of the day when Esther step foot into college at the age of 18 or 19, I will be getting back RM7800 + RM28,728.  But this RM28,728 will be divided into 3 installments which is every year I will only be getting RM9576/Year.

If let say I decided to take up 4 units.  Then every year Esther will be receiving RM38,304/year worth of Scholarship.  And the best part is that you get back the amount you dump in which would be RM31,200.  This indirectly forces you to save, but at the same time ensuring your child to have a secure future for her studies without any worries.  But let say, Esther decided to continue her studies for another 3 years to get her master or a double degree or whatever.  KOPP will be giving out another RM31,200 per Year maximum up till 3 years.  So you will be getting like total of RM115K worth of scholarship, just as long she wants to continue studying KOPP will give her that money to study.  Pretty cool don’t you think?  But what if let say the school fees per year is only RM30,000, what will happen to the remaining balance of RM8,304?  Once the plan hits maturity, KOPP will release the money to you no question asked and will not question what you do with the remaining balance.  The remaining balance could be used to pay for flight and accommodation, or even get a laptop for her.  So you wouldn’t need to worry about that either.

Anyway, this would pretty much lift up my burden with this program.  And if something were to happen to me few years down the road, for example ended up being disabled or actually gone to another world (touch wood :P ).  KOPP will refund me the total amount I have put in no question asked, and Esther will still be able to receive the scholarship once she enters college.  So at least I can rest assure that, if something does happen to me at least I didn’t neglect my responsibility as a father.  Anyway, I believe this is a beautiful program because not only they refund you but reward you making sure that your children will get the financial support they need.  The best part about this program is that, even though your children may not be top students in school but as long as they want to study and get a degree.  KOPP will give you the scholarship that they need in order to have a bright future.  Now everyone can study ;)

Missing In Action

Missing In Action - This was the only I can find for M.I.A

Missing In Action - This was the only I can find for M.I.A

It has been over a year since I’ve been giving courses on eBay. So first and foremost I would like to apologize to everyone who have visited this site and did not get anything out from it. As most of the time I would end up referring all of you to my other associates.
Anyway, just to update what actually have been happening for the past year was that I’ve been trying to adjust my lifestyle especially with the baby around.  Yes, that was mainly the reason why I have been a bit quiet in this section here.  As a lot of adjustment needed to be made.  And of course the time selling on eBay is also a bit difficult for me due to certain time have been taken just to take care of the little one.  Not that I’m complaining or anything, as a matter a fact it was indeed a good and fun experience for me.  But never the less, work is still important and my baby girl is already 1 years ++.  So I can start to go back teaching once again, something which I have miss for a very long time.

I’m currently experimenting a new method in listing my products and trying to see how the outcome would be.  And also I’m currently repackaging my course fees as well as methods of teaching.  There will still be a free course, but just to let you know that eBay won’t be paying for the phone bills anymore.  So I guess we need to resort to Skype or MSN or any other instant messengers that support voice.

For group courses, I will be planning to do a bit of traveling in the near future.  So most likely I’ll be flying around Sarawak.  And if I so by happened to be in your town or city, I won’t mind staying another extra 2-3 days to hold a course.  So do check me out in a couple of weeks, as how I will plan for my year 2010 program specially just for you.   For personal or group seminars do contact me via the contact page and I’ll get in touch with you soon.

Thank you for continuous support, and I hope to see all of you soon.

a blessing become a curse

Tengku Razaleigh I haven’t really been following on the news lately, and when I read this article.  It’s kinda made me wonder how Malaysia would be like if he was the Prime Minister 20 years ago.  Anyway, here are some of his speech I extracted from his website.  And oh yeah, I became one of his fans on facebook as well currently following him on twitter.  And I have a feeling he’s playing Mafia Wars too.. Lol..  But anyway, I wouldn’t know until he add me as a friend on Facebook!  Lol.

Revisiting the middle income trap

I would like to revisit the argument of that speech to develop it further.

We are stagnating. The signs of a low growth economy are all around us. Wages are stagnant and the cost of living is rising.

We have not made much progress in becoming a knowledge and services based economy.

According to the World Bank, Malaysia’s share of GDP contributed by services was 46.2% in 1987. Ten years later, that share had grown by a mere 0.2%
Between 1994 and 2007, real wages grew  by 2.6% in the domestic sector and by 2.8% in the export sector, which is to say, they were flat over that thirteen year period.

Meanwhile our talent scenario is an example of perverse selection at its most ruinous. We are failing to retain our own young talent, people like yourselves, let alone attract international talent to relocate here, while we have had a massive influx of unskilled foreign labour. They now make up 30-40% of our workforce. Meanwhile, alone in East Asia, the number of expatriate professionals here has decreased. Alone in East Asia, private sector wage increases follow government sector increases, instead of the other way around. We are losing doctors and scientists and have become Southeast Asia’s haven for low cost labour.

I said that we are in a middle income trap, stuck in the pattern of easy growth from low-value-added manufacture and component assembly and unable to make the leap to a knowledge-intensive economy. Regional competitors with larger, cheaper and dare I say, hungrier labour forces have emerged. China and India have risen as both lower cost and higher technology producers, and with giant domestic markets. The manufacturing sector which propelled the growth we enjoyed in the nineties is being hollowed out. There is no going back, there is no staying where we are, and we do not have a map for the way forward.
