Selling To The World Via eBay

By STEVEN PATRICK

NEARLY 41% of all eBay.com.my sellers in Malaysia are serious sellers that are practising e-commerce, according to a study done by AC Nielsen Research.

The survey conducted in South East Asia found that these users were actively sourcing for products to sell on the site and were using eBay as primary source of income.

Dan Neary, a vice-president at eBay, said that the survey indicated that a lot of Malaysians are embracing eBay as a platform for entrepreneurship.

“With over 82 million users worldwide and a global presence in 39 markets, eBay is uniquely positioned as a global online marketplace providing boundless opportunities for Malaysian users to buy from and sell to the world,” he said.

He named local eBay entrepreneur Carol Fung as an example. In a press statement, Fung claimed that she makes more than US$1,000 (RM3,300) per month selling sewing and handicraft supplies, such as ribbons, lace and thread.

But Malaysians are also consumers on the local eBay site. The survey also found that Malaysians spent one third of their time online browsing eBay.com.my.

Clothing, shoes and accessories were the most frequently purchased items on eBay.com.my at 38%, followed by books at 36% and computers and networking services at 34%.

On average, the study found that local shoppers spent approximately RM411 per month on eBay.com.my, out of the total RM542 per month spent online.

“The local eBay community has been very active since the launch of the upgraded eBay.com.my site. We have seen more than 30,000 new registrations since last November and unique visitors per month have since increased by 112%,” Neary said.

eBay would not reveal the actual number of local eBay users, as it does not release market-specific statistics.

eBay registers member surge after upgrade

PETALING JAYA: Online marketplace eBay, announced that close to 12,000 new members registered on eBay.com.my in the first 30 days following the launch of its upgraded local site on Nov 13. The latest figure stands at 30,000.

The upgrades on the site includes the Advanced Search tool for more accurate searches and the “My eBay” link that displays a customised page for auction and bid management. For the seller, there’s Selling Manager and eBay Sales Reports for tracking and managing sales.

On the security front, eBay.com.my now has an upgraded online Security and Resolution Centre for reporting problems and an eBay Toolbar with Account Guard feature, which will alert a user if they are visiting a fraudulent site.

According to research firm IDC, Malaysia currently has more than 15 million Internet users and e-commerce is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 17% through 2010.

“The surge of new registrations on eBay.com.my is encouraging as it indicates that Malaysians recognise this potential and are becoming more comfortable with trading online,” eBay vice-president Dan Neary said in a statement. Recognising that trust is a major issue in trading online, eBay also recently collaborated with MOL AccessPortal to launch MOL SafePay in Malaysia.

MOL SafePay is a secure payment solution that facilitates person-to-person fund transfer securely on eBay.com.my, enabling safe online purchases and sales to be carried out.

Ok, as you all might have guessed that I’ve been away to KL to basically joined the other Education Specialist Carol & Chris to help represent eBay Malaysia on this road show :) Anyway, the experience was good in a sense that I was really able to meet other sellers who are currently selling on eBay. As we talked and answered many questions that came across their mind. But it was really a good experience indeed to meet all sorts of people. But the greatest joy was to be able to tell people that eBay indeed is for everyone.

eBay is for everyone!
eBay is for everyone!

The best part during my stay there in KL was that, the warm hospitality that was shown by the other members there. Though we never seen each other in real life, whereby mostly we just chatted on the boards. We basically had a great time, and also couldn’t expect that all of them to be such nice people to be around with. Guess that’s how the community in eBay really is. Anyway, if you start chatting on the boards, you really can meet up real good people :)

New Look of eBay Malaysia

If you all have noticed by now, eBay Malaysia have changed their interface. It is indeed a great news for many sellers, and soon buyers too. Whereby fees will be charge for certain things only. insertation as well as final value fees are not implemented yet. But it will be a good change for Malaysian now since they are also able to withdraw funds from Paypal. The new site looks great, and finally eBay Malaysia have gone pretty much far after over 3 years.

Anyway, it’s all good and hopefully it will reduce the amount of joybidders as well as fraudsters going there. Which I think they’ll also implement in adding a card soon. So it’s all good. Good time to sell, and it won’t be long soon :) As I would be flying off to KL to attend their opening ceremony which will be announced by eBay later. As all eBay staff in US stayed up the whole night just to launch eBay Philippines go live. And I think they mixed up on a little write up they have on me here on introducing instructors. But it’s all good anyway. Been getting quite a number of traffic lately to my other site. So will be looking forward for new things to happen.. Hehehe.. Anyway. Will be leaving this blog to post mostly work related stuff.. You can see why I do so at Holan’s Post. Have a nice day!
